How to convert a Claude chat to PDF in three steps
- Create a public link. In Claude, open the conversation and click Share in the top-right corner. Choose a public link (anyone with the link can view) rather than inviting people by email, then copy it — it looks like
https://claude.ai/share/…. - Paste the link above. Drop it into the converter and click Convert to PDF. Tick Export Claude's responses only if you don't want your prompts in the file.
- Save as PDF. Your browser's print dialog opens with the formatted conversation. Set Destination to Save as PDF and click Save.
The PDF is a real text document, not a screenshot: you can search it, copy from it, and it prints cleanly on A4 or Letter paper.
Web converter or extension — which one should you use?
Use the web converter when the chat can be shared publicly and you only need a PDF — nothing to install, works in any desktop browser. Use the extension when the chat is private, you want Word, Google Docs or Markdown, or you only need one answer or an artifact. Both are free to start.
| Web converter | Claude to PDF extension | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a public share link | Yes | No — works on private chats |
| Full conversation to PDF | ✓ | ✓ |
| Single response or selected messages | — | ✓ |
| Claude artifacts | — | ✓ |

| Google Docs | — | ✓ |
| Markdown (.md) | — | ✓ |
| Charts, graphs and visual elements | — | ✓ |

If you only need the occasional PDF of a chat you're happy to share, use the converter. If you export often, work with private or client material, or need Word and Google Docs, the extension is faster: one click inside claude.ai, no link required.
What the PDF keeps — and what needs the extension
Claude answers are rich — the converter rebuilds them as a document instead of printing the web page:
- Headings and paragraphs in the same hierarchy Claude used
- Code blocks in a monospace font, set apart from the surrounding text
- Tables with borders and header rows
- Bulleted and numbered lists, including nested lists
- Bold, italic and inline code
- Your prompts and Claude's replies, grouped turn by turn — or Claude's replies only
Charts, graphs and Claude's other visual elements are where the two tools differ. The share-link converter captures only the text of Claude's replies. The Claude to PDF extension works from the chat you see in claude.ai, so it can bring the visual parts along:
- Charts and graphs Claude draws are saved as images, in Claude's own colors
- Diagrams, mockups and other visual widgets are kept as images rather than dropped
- Quizzes become a static study guide: each question, its options, the answer and the explanation
- Recipe, step, comparison and itinerary cards turn into formatted sections of the document
- Files Claude created and message drafts are included, while raw tool and connector data is left out
Artifacts are the other gap. A shared snapshot contains them, but the converter lays out only the conversation, so an artifact needs Claude's own Export button (on Docs, Slides and Design artifacts) or the extension, which works on any artifact.
Can you export a Claude chat to Word instead of a PDF?
Yes. A PDF is for reading and filing; when you need to edit, reuse or restyle what Claude wrote, export it to Word. The extension shows a Word button next to PDF by default, and it works on private chats — no share link needed. The web converter on this page makes PDFs only.
- Add the extension to Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc on your computer, then refresh claude.ai.
- Open the conversation you want in Word.
- Click Word at the top right for the whole chat, or under one response for just that answer.
- Open the .docx from your Downloads folder and edit it like any other Word document.
What makes the Word file worth using rather than copy-pasting:
- Equations stay editable — they arrive as native Word equations, not images or LaTeX text
- Tables are real Word tables you can resize, restyle and sort
- Headings, lists and code blocks keep the structure Claude used
- Charts and diagrams come through as images

Why not just press Ctrl+P on claude.ai?
Printing claude.ai directly prints the app page, not a document: interface elements come along and long chats may not come out complete. The converter fetches the full shared conversation and lays it out as a clean document first — just the prompts and replies.

Private by design
The converter only reads conversations that are already public through a share link — the same snapshot anyone with that link can open. It loads the page, returns the formatted document to your browser, and stores nothing — no account, no database, no copy of your chat. The privacy policy has the details. The extension runs inside your own browser session, so private chats never need to be shared at all.
